چکیده

We explore the possibility for the formation of Population III binaries. The collapse of a rotating cylinder is simulated with a three-dimensional, highresolution nested grid, assuming the thermal history of primordial gas. The simulations are done with dimensionless units, and the results are applicable to low-mass as well as massive systems by scaling with the initial density. We find that if the initial angular momentum is as small as β ≈ 0.1, where β is the ratio of centrifugal force to pressure force, then the runaway collapse of the cloud stops to form a rotationally-supported disk. After the accretion of the envelope, the disk undergoes a ring instability, eventually fragmenting into a binary. If the initial angular momentum is relatively large, a bar-type instability arises, resulting in the collapse into a single star through rapid angular momentum transfer. The present results show that a significant fraction of Pop III stars are expected to form in binary systems, even if they are quite massive or less massive. The cosmological implications of Population III binaries are briefly discussed. Subject headings: binaries: general — cosmology: theory — hydrodynamics — instabilities — stars: formation

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

The Lack of Gamma-Ray Bursts from Population III Binaries

We study the evolution of first star (Population III) binaries. Under specific conditions, these stars may produce high redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We demonstrate that the occurrence rate of GRBs does not depend sensitively on evolutionary parameters in the population synthesis models. We show that the first binaries may form a very small group (. 1%) of fast rotating stars through binary...

High-redshift Gamma-ray Bursts from Population Iii Progenitors

Detection of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from redshifts z ∼> 7 would open a new window into the earliest epoch of cosmic star formation. We construct separate star formation histories at high redshifts for normal (Pop I and II) stars, and for predominantly massive (Pop III) stars. Based on these separate histories, we predict the GRB redshift distribution to be observed by the Swift mission. Regard...

The formation and evolution of binary systems - III. Low-mass binaries in the Praesepe cluster

With the aim of investigating the binary population of the 700 Myr old Praesepe cluster, we have observed 149 G and K-type cluster members using adaptive optics. We detected 26 binary systems with an angular separation ranging from less than 0.08 to 3.3 arcsec (15–600 AU). After correcting for detection biases, we derive a binary frequency (BF) in the log P (days) range from 4.4 to 6.9 of 25.3±...

Formation of Low-mass X-ray Binaries. Iii. a New Formation Mechanism: Direct Supernova

We propose a new formation mechanism (direct-supernova) for low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) that does not involve any prior phase of mass transfer. Survival through the supernova (SN) explosion and shrinkage of the orbit is achieved by a kick velocity of appropriate magnitude and direction imparted to the neutron star at its birth. We present analytical population synthesis calculations of LMXB...
